Personalized Education Program (PEP)
Choosing Between PEP and Unique Abilities (UA) Scholarships
When deciding which Step Up scholarship is best for your child, it’s important to understand the differences between the PEP (Personalized Education Plan) scholarship and the Unique Abilities (UA) scholarship.
1. PEP Scholarship
Purpose: Helps students who are not enrolled in public school.
Eligibility: Students who are in grades K‑12, priority goes to lower-income families, and they may benefit from a personalized educational approach.
Best For: Families seeking flexibility in educational placement, personalized learning, or support for students with academic challenges but without a diagnosed disability.
2. Unique Abilities (UA) Scholarship
Purpose: Specifically designed for students with documented disabilities, including learning differences, physical disabilities, or developmental challenges.
Eligibility: Requires a formal diagnosis or documentation from a licensed professional. See website for qualifications.
Best For: Families of students with disabilities who need accommodations, therapies, or specialized instructional support that a private school can provide.
How to Decide
Documentation: UA requires proof of disability, while PEP does not necessarily require medical or professional documentation.
Student Needs: Consider whether your child’s primary need is academic flexibility and support (PEP) or disability-specific accommodations (UA).
Funding Amount: Both scholarships provide funding for homeschool, but amounts may differ based on the student’s needs and grade level. Check the Step Up website for current rates. PEP is about 8,000 a year and UA is about 10,000 a year.
