How to Apply for Step Up Scholarships

(Step Up For Students)

Follow these steps to apply for Step Up Scholarships and maximize your chance of receiving funding for private or homeschool in Florida.

1. Create Your Online Account (EMA)

Tip: Have your email ready and write down your login info for next year.

2. Gather Required Documents
Before starting your application, collect all required supporting documents, such as:

  • Proof of Florida residency

  • Child’s birth certificate

  • Income documentation (if applicable)

  • Any other documents requested in the application prompts

You will upload these documents directly in the EMA portal.

3. Complete the Application

  • Inside the EMA portal, click “Apply” next to the scholarship program you want (e.g., Florida Tax Credit, Family Empowerment, Unique Abilities, PEP).

  • Follow all on-screen instructions and fill in all required fields.

  • Upload your supporting documents when prompted.

  • Review everything before submitting.

  • Keep track of your application status by checking your EMA account and monitoring your email.

Important Deadlines

  • Applications open: February 1 for the upcoming school year

  • Priority deadline: April 30 — submit by this date for priority consideration

  • Extended window: Many scholarships continue accepting applications through November 15, but after April 30 applications are treated as new and funding may be limited

Note: Exceptions allow families to apply year-round, such as military dependents, students in foster care, or those experiencing bullying.

After You Apply

  • Step Up reviews your application and may request additional documents.

  • You will see your award status in your EMA account once a decision is made.

  • Notify your school (if applicable) by providing your award letter so they can complete enrollment forms.

Waitlist & Funding Notes

  • Scholarships are often awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and may be limited by available funds.

  • If funds run out before your application is processed, you may be placed on a waitlist. Stay signed into your EMA account and monitor email communications.

  • Step Up may notify you if funding becomes available and you are moved off the waitlist.

  • Applying early, ideally by April 30, reduces the chance of being waitlisted.
